Wingspan from 50 mm (Morpho rhodopteron) to 150-180 mm, and in some species reaches 210 mm (Morpho Hecuba). The color of the wings of most species is blue or blue, with a metallic sheen. There are species with wings of mother-of-pearl and pearl-white color; with black-blue or red-brown pattern. Shiny with a metallic reflection of the wings, the color is entirely optical, it is based on the refraction of light. Thin-layer interference occurs in the wing scales. The pigment at the bottom of the flakes does not transmit light and gives greater brightness to the interference color. Rays of light, passing through the scales, are reflected both from their external and internal surfaces, and as a result, the two reflected beams overlap and reinforce each other. The underside of the wings is dark, painted mainly in various shades of brown. Numerous concentric "eyes" with a white center, spots and small bands are scattered along the main background of the underside of the wings. Sitting on tree branches or on the ground and folding their wings, butterflies become like dry leaves. Sexual dimorphism is pronounced: females of many species are colored in shades of yellow with gray-brown spots. The underside of the wings is brown, brown, with "eyes".
