Silfra - the freshwater fissure between the continents. Silfra is a unique phenomenon on this planet. The Silfra Tectonic Fissure is a unique phenomenon on this planet. There are several other freshwater rifts similar to Silfra in Iceland, but Silfra itself is the most beautiful, interesting and easily accessible to recreational divers and snorkelers. The visibility in Silfra exceeds 100m, making it some of the clearest water in the world, and divers and snorkellers dive and float between the American and Eurasian continental plates. There are even places where they can actually touch both continents at the same time.

These facts, added to the amazingly beautiful underwater landscape of Silfra, made of lave rock, sand and algae, create a great appeal to the recreational diving and snorkelling community all around the world. Many experienced divers come to Iceland with the specific intention to come dive Silfra and experience this amazing site first hand.

Lake Hillier in Western Australia. With its mere 600 meters in length, Lake Hillier is not one that will impress you by its size. Nor will it impress you by its diverse fishes that inhabit it. Lake Hillier delights your eye with its pink color. Moreover, it lies just next to the Pacific Ocean, thus if you watch it from above, the contrast between the mellow pink of the lake and the blue of the ocean is striking.

A unique biological wonder, Caño Cristales has been referred as the “river of five colors,” “the river that ran away from paradise,” and “the most beautiful river in the world.” For most of the year, Caño Cristales is indistinguishable from any other river: a bed of rocks covered in dull green mosses are visible below a cool, clear current.

However, for a brief period of time every year, the river blossoms in a vibrant explosion of colors. During the short span between the wet and dry seasons, when the water level is just right, a unique species of plant that lines the river floor called Macarenia clavigera turns a brilliant red. It is offset by splotches of yellow and green sand, blue water, and a thousand shades in between.

There’s a beach way down in the Maldives that looks like something out of a science-fiction fairy tale. It’s gorgeous, to say the least.

Bioluminescent waves in San Diego, Red Tide Blue Waves, Alien footsteps on beach, Red Tide Surfing.

The lost world of Socotra, a remote island with plants up to 20 million years old

The remote island of Socotra could be straight out of a science-fiction movie. Its native flora is so unique and foreign to the eye that it has been described as the most alien looking place on earth. But this small island, nestled in the Indian Ocean around 250 kilometers off the coast of Somalia, is very real, and is home to around 800 rare species of flora and fauna , including varieties of plants that have existed on earth for more than 20 million years.
