2022 Nissan Rogue Walkaround

Overview
While its name may make you think of bad-boy shenanigans, the 2022 Nissan Rogue is an average compact crossover with no such attitude. The Rogue is handsomely styled but it's no athlete, and lacks the fun-to-drive character of the Mazda CX-5 or the Volkswagen Tiguan. Practicality and value are the Rogue's strong points, with a spacious cabin, generous cargo room, and a host of standard and optional niceties that SUV buyers crave, including several high-tech infotainment and driver-assistance items. Like the Rogue but need a third row of seats? The mechanically similar Mitsubishi Outlander delivers much the same experience with room for two more passengers.

What's New for 2022?
The Rogue's lethargic 2.5-liter four-cylinder has been replaced for 2022 with a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that makes 201 horsepower. The Rogue's CVT transmission has also been revised and is said to aid acceleration and fuel economy.

Pricing and Which One to Buy
S $27,875
SV $29,565
SL $34,225
Platinum $37,655
The mid-level SV model offers the best mix of features for the money. It adds niceties such as 18-inch aluminum wheels, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat, a 360-degree exterior camera system, and Nissan's ProPilot Assist semi-autonomous driving mode. We'd spring for the SV Premium package too, which adds a panoramic sunroof, a power-operated rear liftgate, roof rails, and faux-leather upholstery.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance
For 2022, the Rogue's 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder has been phased out in favor of a smaller but more powerful turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder that makes 201 horsepower. Like the previous-year model, the Rogue comes standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and front-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is optional. We criticized last year's Rogue for its lackadaisical acceleration but during our brief test drive of the new turbo three, the compact crossover felt perkier. When we get a chance to take the Rogue with the new engine to our test track, we'll update this story with test results.
