John, the son of Zebedee, was called to be one of the Apostles closest to Christ, seemingly the very closest. Due to his virginal purity, this beloved of Christ was chosen to convey to the Catholic Church the highest theology about the Blessed Sacrament and the Divinity of Christ. He was also chosen to be the special protector and son of the Virgin Mary on Calvary. It is a pious opinion of the Church Fathers that he followed Her body and soul into heaven after death.
