Views of an abandoned salt field at Dingshan Village, Qigu District, Tainan City, Taiwan.
The amazing colors and shapes of nature became visible after a long dry period. The abandoned Dingshan (頂山) salt ponds in Cigu District (七股) have turned into a field of spectacular colors. Evaporated seawater trapped in the salt pools has turned the ponds into a rusty reddish-brown color. Reportedly the red color of the salt originates from algae and the circular holes are being created by mating Tilapia fish. The salt mines were established by the Japanese colonial government in 1942. The ponds were used to extract salt from the sea. Mining operations seized in 2002.
