To those belittling her reaction or who are tempted to make fun of her:
Just because something isn't a big deal to you, that doesn't mean it can't be a big deal to someone else. Your reaction and opinion isn't universal, and thank god for that.
Griefing is lowkey abuse. It's meant to make people feel vulnerable for the joy of making someone feel vulnerable. You don't seek out people to ruin the day for their fun; you do it because their pain brings you joy. It's not part of a game; its not fun for the other person. As we see, it can mess someone up pretty badly, which is the entire point of doing it in the first place. Just because it's so common and normalized in gaming and in various IRL cultures, that doesn't make it acceptable or laudable behavior. It just means there are very many assholes out there.
There are various reasons why people do this:
-They're narcissists or sociopaths/don't get what empathy is.
-They've been bullied and abused so often that they think it's normal behavior.
-They've been bullied and abused so often that they enjoy the rush of being on the other side.
-That they have been taught it's normal and acceptable behavior.
-Their own lives are so bereft of agency and victories that this is the only way they'll feel like they have any control or power.
And yes, gender has something to do with it: most victims of abuse are women, and most abusers are men. Women have to live with threats that men don't, and living under threat constantly makes you more sensitive to that threat. And the entire point of abuse is that anyone will be bothered by it: hurt, made to feel vulnerable, and scared. So if you're more focused on a person who has a natural reaction to a behavior than the asshat engaging in that behavior, that makes you an asshat too.
So to those griefers out there, congrats, you're a threat to other people's good time. But it also means there are things you can't be: a friend, a lover, a role model, someone worth helping, someone worth knowing, someone wanted, someone who is missed, someone who is loved.
If you're wondering why I care: I have friends who have been abused, and it pisses me off.

Because it's lowkey abusive behavior. It's intentionally making someone feel vulnerable for the rush of intentionally making someone feel vulnerable. Not everyone is bothered by it, but there are very many who are. It's not about the actual damage done, but the intent. If someone's experienced abuse in real life, they'll see the same patterns and have the same triggers when it happens online. And even without a history of abuse, it's still abusive behavior and there are people who are sensitive to that. There is a huge wealth of online sources describing and defining abuse, and there are countless millions who have experienced it. We all know someone who's been abused; we just might not know it. It's worth learning about.
The answer isn't to tell them to 'shake it off' but to go after the asshats who get their jollies by hurting other people.
I remember watching a boxing match on tv many years ago: fair fight but had a clear winner. After the fight, the loser, gloves off but hands still wrapped, sucker punched the winner, I think broke his jaw. The loser was arrested. Lesson: there's a recognized difference between a fair, consensual contest and an assault.

Imagine. Getting This mad over a video game. Some people need to like figure it out. There is Real Life, then there is the Internet. This is why so much Censorship is popping up. its crazy.
