Inside the Temple of Abu Simbel, Aswan, Egypt.
Inside the Temple of Abu Simbel, Aswan, Egypt. The single entrance is flanked by four colossal 20 m (66 ft) tall statues, each representing Ramesses II seated on a throne and wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt. The statue immediately to the left of the entrance was damaged in an earthquake, causing the head and torso to fall off; these fallen pieces were not recovered from, but were placed at the feet of the statue in the positions originally found.
Near the feet of Ramesses are a number of other smaller statues, no higher than the knees of the pharaoh, depicting: his main wife, Nefertari Meritmut; his queen mother Mut-Tui; his first two sons, Amon-her-khepeshef and Ramesses B; and his first six daughters: Bintanat, Baketmut, Nefertari, Meritamen, Nebettawi and Isetnofret.
