In this video I show how I install a compact (RO) Reverse Osmosis system into my (TT) Travel Trailer. I set this RO system up with two modes, mode one is used to fill my RV fresh water storage tank with filtered water when I am connected to a city water connection and mode two is used so that it will not waste water when I am out boondocking. In mode one I fill my (FWT) fresh water tank with the RO filtered water, I shunt the "waste" water to a port on the outside of the TT so that I can fill 5 gallon buckets and use it for watering plants. In the mode two when I am boondocking I shunt the RO waste back into the fresh water holding tank so that it is not wasted like a normal system that runs the waste water into the drain.
In mode one when connected to a city water pressurized connection the "waste" water from this system has passed through 3 stages of filters, then the water passes through the RO element where some water is removed by the osmosis process through the tank connection port and stored, the waste water that is exhausted from the drain port is what remains on the input side of the RO element and has a higher concentration of TDS (total dissolved solids ) which is mainly mineral content.
In mode two while boondocking we are running water that has already run through the RO process that we stored in mode one so the "waste" water has an extremely low TDS content, the "waste" water from the drain port is returned to the FWT where it can still be used for washing hands, flushing, showering or even run through the RO filter again and again to make more drinking water.
The system uses three valves. One of the valves directs final RO filtered water into the fresh water holding tank, and the other two vales direct "waste" water to the external port or to the FWT.
I connected this system without cutting any plumbing in the original system. I used 1/2 inch threaded to 1/4 inch push to connect quick connectors, I drilled two holes for mounting the faucet and for the external exhaust tubing.
Unfortunately I lost some of the video I filmed for this content, like watering plants with "waste" water....grumble...grumble..
