Actraiser Renaissance (PC) - Hard Mode - Part 1: The Master Returns

In a Nintendo Direct two weeks ago, there was one game that was announced that caught me completely off guard. It was the last thing I would have expected to see but I'm really glad I saw it, and now let's start playing it! Welcome to Actraiser Renaissance!

The original Actraiser was a first-year SNES title with a unique gameplay genre combination of hack-and-slash action and city-building simulation. You wouldn't think this combination would work, but this game made it work in style! In this game you basically play God, gaining a following to restore your lost power and then striking down the devil (known as Tanzra in this game due to Nintendo's religious censorship policies in the 1990s) from the world. As my best friend describes it, it's Lord of the Rings meets SimCity meets The Bible.

The Renaissance remake follows the same basic premise but greatly expands upon both the story and the gameplay. In the action segments, you get access to more types of sword attacks as well as access to multiple different spells (in the original, you could only take one spell with you), and you can find hidden scrolls to permanently increase your MP. In the city-building segments, you get to learn more about the origins of Tanzra's generals and how each area's resident hero joined the fight against them. The city-building sections also introduce a new set of action stages as well as a completely new genre. In the original game, all you had to do was direct your people to a monster lair and they will automatically seal it off. Here, you direct your people to the monster lair, and then you have to go in yourself to destroy the orbs and finally the monster spawner in another mini-action stage. Also, at various points a horde of monsters will siege your settlement, which is where the brand-new genre of Tower Defense comes into play! Here, you build fortifications, command your heroes, and rain down miracles to defend your temple from the monsters!

There are three difficulty settings to choose from: Easy, Normal, and Hard, which changes the amount of damage enemies can take and dish out. And since you know me and challenges, I'm going Hard Mode! In the first part, we get our foothold in Fillmore and meet our first resident hero Philotas!
