A former Toronto police constable who admitted to lying to a York detective investigating a Vaughan murder to protect his younger brother has been acquitted of his perjury charges five years after he was initially charged.

In light of the news, Bolton's Daniel Costa now plans to appeal his dismissal from the Toronto force, his lawyer, Mark Sandler, told yorkregion.com.

The former officer was initially charged in 2011 soon after he told police that he'd been lying during a one-hour interview he had with York police Det. Al Cooke, who was questioning him about the whereabouts of his brother, Michael Costa, an accused drug smuggler and person of interest in the case.
