Rules of the challenge: Keep Magic and Attack stats at level 1 for the entire game.
This week on a special Challenge edition of Sunday Longplay, let's once again revisit Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link! I've already done two self-imposed challenges for this game: one that involved keeping my Attack and Life stats at level 1 for the entire game, and another keeping my Life and Magic at level 1 for the entire game. Now I'm doing the last two-stat Level 1 challenge with Attack and Magic at level 1.

With level 1 magic, you really need to conserve your MP and only use it if absolutely necessary. Navigation spells like Jump and Fairy are very expensive with level 1 magic, so you don't want to use them unless you absolutely have to to make a high jump or to get across the lava chasm in the Hidden Palace. This also means you can't use any magic on the way through the Great Palace, because you need every single MP to use Thunder on Thunderbird. You also have to visit the Maze Palace twice because you won't have enough MP to use Reflect on Carock until you complete the rest of the game. Combine that with a level 1 Attack stat, and endgame bosses become extremely durable, and Thunderbird becomes a war of attrition since you won't have enough magic to use the Shield spell to reduce the damage from his incredibly painful fireballs. At least, since you're required to upgrade one stat if you can afford all three, your level 8 Life stat will mean you'll be able to withstand at least a few hits.

I'm also changing things up with this challenge by using a sprite hack somebody made that replaces Link with Marisa Kirisame from the Touhou series. The game itself remains unchanged, but you're simply playing as a different character. This character sprite hack also does something that somebody suggested on my Zelda 2 Redux video, by making Marisa's hurt sound effect more feminine, using the same SFX as Sypha from Castlevania 3 (while Link used the same SFX as Simon Belmont from Castlevania 1). I wonder if the creators of the Lady Link and BS-X Girl sprite hacks will implement this change in a future update, or if the Zelda 2 Randomizer will implement it with its female character custom sprites...
