Hosea 1:1–2:23 Psalm 138:4–6 Proverbs 29:17 1 John 3:1–24
- Hosea 1 - The LORD began to tell Hosea, “Go, take yourself a wife of harlotry And children of harlotry, For the land has committed great harlotry By departing from the LORD.”
- MacArthur notes and we should too: That this theme of Gomer being unfaithful to Hosea as Israel is unfaithful to the Triune living God, is the key theme of the book.
- 1st son - Judgment of the nation in Jezreel, 2nd Daughter, No mercy, 3rd Child son, - You are Not My People,
- Hosea 2 - God is giving his people good things and they are giving it to Baal, (Canaan god of fertility and abundant crops)
- 19“I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me In righteousness and justice, In lovingkindness and mercy; 20 I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, And you shall know the LORD.
- And then remember the names of the kids -
- And I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy;
- Then I will say to those who were not My people, ‘You are My people!’ And they shall say, ‘You are my God!’ ”
- Psalm 138:4-6
- All the kings of the earth shall praise you O LORD, - notice the constant drift toward idolatry
- The LORD is on high, yet He regards the lowly, the proud he knows from afar,
- Proverbs 29:17 - correct your son 🙂 and he will give you rest and delight to your soul,
- 1 John 3:1-24 - 3Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! - one of the greatest promises in all of the Bible is that we are adopted into God's Kingdom, we are not just left in a state of neutrality,
- Definition of sin - sin is lawlessness - 10 commandments, people don't seem to understand the importance of this,
- Then John goes into a harsh rebuke of those that sin (habitual sin is in view here) - and perhaps this is overwhelming for you,
- at a time like this it is important to make sure you are resting in the gospel,
- Does the world hate you? We know we have passed from death to life because we love the brethren, then John says we know love because he laid down his life for us and we ought to lay our lives down for the brethren. 18My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth.
- AND then John says this - he abides in us by the Spirit whom He has given us,
- Macarthur notes 4 reasons Christians cannot "Practice" sin
- 1. Incompatible with the law of God (reflection of God's Character)
- 2. Incompatible with the work of Christ
- 3. Works of Satan Christ destroyed
- 4. Ministry of the Holy Spirit
- Keep your eyes on the cross and his death burial and resurrection
