Sunday Longplay - The Guardian Legend (NES)

This week on Sunday Longplay, it's an NES game I've wanted to play on my channel for a while now but never got around to until now. Welcome to The Guardian Legend on the Nintendo Entertainment System!

There have been video games that combine two gameplay genres together that you wouldn't think would work well together but end up pulling it off (like my recent playthrough of Actraiser Renaissance that combined hack-and-slash action with city-building simulation and tower defense). The Guardian Legend is one of those games, combing top-down adventure (like The Legend of Zelda) with shoot-em-up action (like Gradius). In this game, the player character known simply as The Guardian (though some sources like the original Japanese manual also call her Miria, also the name her character sprite uses for the Zelda 2 Randomizer) infiltrates the alien world of Naju and must deactivate 10 safety devices on the planet to make it self-destruct and stop it from crashing into Earth. The safety devices lie at the end of various corridors into the planet's interior which serve as the shmup segments of the game.

When I finished playing Blaster Master Zero 3 for the first time, I thought about this game and I thought its style would have been perfect for a spinoff game starring Leibniz. Think about it, Leibniz could explore the area on-foot in the top-down sections and then jump into Garuda for the shmup segments. I think it would be perfect. Make it happen, Inti Creates!
