The good guy (Timothy Hutton) treats the girl badly. The bad guy (Armand Assante) treats the girl (Jenny Lumet) well. It's so rare that a woman says no after the male protagonist gives his love speech. She says no because of race. She won't excuse or love him because of his racism. I love the rhythm of his speech--how fast he starts to go as he lists all the reasons that he loves her. I love that she calls him "white boy" after he gives his soliloquy. Returning to the fault and wounding of his racism and white supremacy. I love that if you need to find love, you can always look to cinema. Even if it's just to hear the words. Even if it's just to watch the look.
