And as I was thinking about this today and working all of this in my heart again, these truths here in Matthew as they are presented are absolutely beautiful and just so tremendous. The birth of Jesus Christ in

Verse 18: was on this wise

Simply happened in the following manner. Doesn't say, doesn't give you all the truth but everything it gives you is truth.

[18] his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph,

Espoused to Joseph. Many times it, some translator is translated 'engaged' but in our culture the word engaged I believe is too shallow a word. It does not really communicate at all what the word espoused means. In Luke, keep your finger here and go to Luke again. In:

Luke 2:4 it says: Joseph went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David)
[5] To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife,

There the two words are put together. The best that I have been able to work this through the years is to fully recognize that the word espoused means like a spouse, wife. Luke gives it and I think this is beautiful and gives us light on the words if we have ears to hear. And to the best of my understanding and working of the word: from the first day of the ten days of the wedding. And the biblical weddings lasted ten days.

Ten days, and from the first day on she was already his wife, although they had not, you know, that which is joined together and nobody separates or something. They hadn't said those words yet, it hadn't come to the final tenth day, but she was already his wife. And the word a spousal or a spouse is used throughout that whole first year of their marriage because the first year of the marriage the whole year was a honeymoon. And so they spent six months with her in-laws and so forth, and six months with his and they got to know the family. And that whole year is called this, that's why even when he went with her to Bethlehem before Jesus Christ was born she was still referred to as an espoused wife. Simply telling you or telling God's people who want to hear, they were still on their first year of marriage and that's why I believe the word is used. That's the best I know until somebody shows me something better. But I haven't seen anything better anytime anyplace.
