The Chatcolet Bridge over Lake Coeur d'Alene, (Lake Chatcolet) Idaho - The historic Chatcolet Bridge spans Lake Coeur d'Alene at the lake's southern end. This swing span bridge is now part of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes, a recreational trail which travels 73 miles from Plummer, Idaho to the Chatcolet Campground area in Heyburn State Park, across the Chatcolet Bridge and on to Harrison, Idaho, and then continuing to Idaho's Silver Valley. The route of the Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes was once a railroad track, and is now part of one of the best bicycle trails in the Pacific Northwest.

Built in 1921, this historic bridge stretches across the lake, allowing trail users to pass 3,178 feet across the St. Joe River channel. (Chatcolet Lake is attached to the south end of Lake Coeur d' Alene, and forms the mouth of the Saint Joe River.) The Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes is a majestic 73-mile rail trail that takes you through some of the most majestic northern Idaho scenery. The trail is primarily a biking trail, but is also heavily used by hikers. It generally follows the Coeur d'Alene River all the way to Mullan, Idaho. The section of the trail where the Chatcolet Bridge is located is one of the more heavily trafficked areas of the trail during fair weather.

This section of the trail is best accessed at the Chatcolet access area parking lot in Heyburn State Park. Created in 1908, Heyburn State Park is the oldest park in the Pacific Northwest. Towering Ponderosa pines give way to flower-filled meadows and placid waters. Visitors can enjoy the peaceful serenity of cottages, cabins and campsites and admire the work of the Civilian Conservation Corps who built many buildings within the park in the 1930s.

Comprised of about 5,744 acres of land and 2,332 acres of water, Heyburn State Park is a paddler and pedaler paradise. Miles of trails await you whether you are a hiker, cyclist or horse rider. Bring your own boat or rent a kayak, canoe, or standup paddleboard and enjoy three lakes — Chatcolet, Benewah and Hidden Lakes, or the shadowy St. Joe River, which meanders along the eastern boundary of the park. The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes, one of the most popular biking trails in the western United States, runs directly through the park.
