The Oak was taken from a fallen tree and still had a very high moisture content, no time to let it dry slowly over a year so in the oven the pieces went to speed up the drying. After the over the pieces was left to settle for around 4 weeks before finishing. There was a large fault running all the way through the wood, so this piece would have split anyway regardless of the forced drying process.
