Known also as freak waves, monster waves, episodic waves, killer waves, extreme waves, and abnormal waves, rogue waves are unusually large, unpredictable, and suddenly appearing surface waves that can be extremely dangerous to ships of any size. In deep waters, they are usually almost unnoticeable, unlike tsunamis, which result from the displacement of water due to other phenomena (such as earthquakes). Rogue waves at the shore are sometimes called sneaker waves.
