Bitch who was almost put down due to injuries gets titanium prosthesis in Russia.
The dog Monika, rescued in Russia, has a new life after receiving titanium prostheses in her paws. The surgery came just months after doctors suggested she should be put down because of her severe injuries.
The operation was performed by Novosibirsk City-based veterinarian Sergei Gorshkov, who has operated by implementing prosthetics on 37 animals since 2015. Monika is the first dog to benefit from his work.
Two weeks after her operation, the dog is adapting well to her new mobility, and Gorshkov says she will soon lead a normal life, although he was "surprised" by the speed of her recovery.
However, getting Monika to the surgical center was not easy: workers in the village of Plastunovskaya and volunteers who rescued her initially found her without paws in December 2020 and suspected that she had been a victim of mistreatment.
Monika was taken into the care of animal rescue volunteers Marina Gapich and Alla Leonkina, who live in the southern Russian city of Krasnodar, where she had her damaged limbs amputated and received a blood transfusion.
Monika's prostheses had to be printed with a 3D printer in the city of Troitstk, not far from Moscow, and then coated with a biological coating at Tomsk Polytechnic University before Gorshkov could perform the procedure.
"I am happy to give animals a new life, especially now during Covid-19," Gorshkov said. "People find some comfort in animals, and so by treating animals, I treat people."
