Talismans ablaze for good fortune

Japanese worshipers participated in a fire ceremony at Kasuga Taisha Grand Shrine. They burned talismans in the hope of bringing good luck, health and prosperity to the new year. The flames would later be used to light Mount Wakakusa for the Wakakusayama Yamayaki festival.
