The reason is due to the extremely strong winds that hit the waterfall, which is rare for Yosemite Valley. This helped create some incredible clouds of water just as the Sun was beginning to rise.

The diffraction of sunlight rays hitting the water droplets resulted in an undulating rainbow that stretched across the 1,500-foot waterfall.
