Mickey Mantle, the Commerce Comet, the Mighty Mick, the famous NY Yankee and possibly the greatest switch hitter in history was actually a shy boy from rural Oklahoma. The son of a lead and zinc miner, Mickey Mantle prided himself on being from Oklahoma. Discovered by the Yankees in 1949, by 1951 he was playing in the Major Leagues but wanted to maintain a link to Oklahoma. So he bought a lot in Commerce, Oklahoma and commissioned a custom built house where his family lived from 1958 to 1960 before they relocated to Dallas, which had closer access to a major airport for his frequent flights to and from New York. Mickey sold the house to one of his father’s fellow miners, and that family still owns it. I was invited inside, to view an unknown and unique piece of baseball history. As far as I know, no one else has ever filmed here. Thank you so much, Dennis, for allowing me inside. Please subscribe, because if Dennis begins working on the home to reveal original floors and walls, I plan to be there to document it.
