He was born in Warrington, Cheshire in England while his American father served in Air Force but he was raised in Montgomery, AL. Since 1979 when he began his career as a filmmaker, he has been a writer, director and editor. As a film director, Brown co-directed the documentary film The War at Home (1979), for which it was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and was one of the youngest nominees for the category. Some of his other film directing credits include The Who's Tommy, the Amazing Journey (1993), a documentary film about The Who's Tommy album, and the feature films Winning Girls Through Psychic Mind Control (2002), starring Bronson Pinchot and Son of the South (2020). Brown has also edited music videos for Michael Jackson, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Public Enemy and Arrested Development. Barry’s latest feature film, titled, Son of the South was just released on February 8th and is a poignant true story set in Montgomery, Alabama about the life of Bob Zellner, the grandson of a Klansman who must choose which side of history to be on during the Civil Rights Movement. Defying his family and white Southern norms, he fought against social injustice, repression and violence during the civil rights era.
On this podcast episode we talk about his career working with Spike Lee as an editor and his most recent project as a director, Son of the South.
