Though now hailed for its beautiful lyricism, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s only violin concerto suffered setbacks before becoming one of the most esteemed works in the violin repertoire. The piece was unveiled in 1878, dedicated to the distinguished Hungarian violinist Leopold Auer. To Tchaikovsky’s dismay, Auer professed the piece unplayable. It was not until three years later that German violinist Adolf Brodsky finally premiered it. Brodsky’s performance received top accolades, while the concerto itself still received only hostility. Auer, however, later retracted his opinion and taught the concerto to his renowned pupils. The Finale performed here erupts forth, with the solo violin prancing through melodies evocative of folk airs while showcasing an exhilarating display of techniques.
