Mary Ann “Polly” Nichols: The Life of Jack the Ripper’s First Victim (Ripper Victims EPISODE 1)

Mary Ann Nichols, known as Polly to family and friends died on August 31, 1888, the victim of a brutal murder. Everyone knows that, her life has become lost entirely, until she is nothing more than a photograph of a body in a morgue. 133 years after her death everyone obsesses about discovering the identity of her killer, Jack the Ripper, while totally ignoring the women he killed, discussing them only in reference to the violence done to their bodies. But Polly was a daughter, sister, wife and mother. Her death broke the hearts of her family. This is her story. I have included images of Polly in life, and used a free version of FaceApp to see what she looks like smiling, or what she might have looked like at various ages.

This is part one of a series covering the lives of each victim, with minimal talk of Jack the Ripper himself. He has had enough attention. The book “The Five” by Hallie Rubenhold was my main source. The book is fabulous, please read it!
