The SRY gene, which is the typical trigger for male sexual development, does many other things in the body, including in the brain. Here, I discuss one property it has, which is that it can apparently activate following injury in order to protect the vulnerable male dopamine system. This function wanes with time and loss of dopamine producing cells. Loss of dopamine-producing cells in the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia is what ultimately gives rise to Parkinson's.
