Although we cover a lot of larger neighborhoods and communities throughout San Diego, sometimes the best presents come in the smallest packages if you know what I mean. So picture yourself heading down Adams Avenue, just north of the 15. Eventually, you are welcomed by a massive neon lit sign straddling the street and a tradition since 1953, to welcome you to the community of Kensington.
Originally the land was inherited by two sister’s, Abby and Mary Hall, and were actually some of the first women landowners in all of San Diego! The land which was residual of a mission, was turned into a park but eventually found its way on the map as a housing development in 1910. Some of these original craftsman style homes still stand on the lots today. The sisters eventually sold off the land with the help of some family who worked in real estate,to a couple former executives of the Santa Fe Railway Company, The company would slowly add additional lots to the smaller but promising area. These included the following subdivisions of Kensington Park and Kensington Heights, which they later combined into the neighborhood of Kensington.
The name “Kensington,” does in fact come from the western district of Kensington in London. The sisters were originally from an area in Massachusetts where most street names were influenced by areas of England, so they decided to bring a piece of their own history to the west coast.

Although a very slight area, the community encompasses a neighborhood, culture, and business center. The touch of New England gives you the small town feeling that is rare to the city of San Diego. Along with the craftsman style prevalent in 1910, there also stands some Spanish revival homes from the 20’s as well.
Because of the area's unique design, Kensington is most notable for the architecture of it’s homes and neighboring businesses. Architects Cliff May and Richard Requa built a majority of the homes in the area. Requa’s designs even influenced the existing character of Kensington today.
The main street of Adams Avenue also gives the community a great platform to put on some of the most unique events throughout the year. In the summer, they are the host to a 4th of July block party, or annual memorial day parade, and even a street basketball tournament for you sports fans!

The small but mighty area of Kensington has tons of restaurants and businesses to visit especially on a night out. Enjoy a home crafted brew from Kensington Brewing Company. Not sure what to eat? Take a look at a french menu at Bleu Boheme, some asian fusion from Tanuki or Khan's Cave Grill and Tavern, or some of the best slices and some pasta from Pappalecco.
It really is a great destination for a night out, especially this time of year, the holidays!
It’s a great time to head over, grab a bite to eat, walk in and around the neighborhood, and enjoy the local festivities, lights, and live performances.

In conclusion, small neighborhoods and communities like that of Kensington is what makes San Diego so unique and diverse, and ultimately desirable. It truly is amazing how two women changed a small part of the city forever, and for all to enjoy.
