Note that implicit in Lemon's comment is that people who do their own research are against the greater good of society. Implicit is that the laws and rules are correct and just. However, what if they're not?

If the electorate is ignorant/stupid/brainwashed/hysterical, the elite and politicians have an easier time doing what they want. That's exactly why you should do your own research and independent critical thinking. It's exactly why the elite and politicians want you to NOT do those things.
