The plant grows to less than 30cm and flowers in summer, and the flowers bloom only for one day and then wither. When the center of the petiole swells and resembles a swim bladder, it floats on the water surface, so it is called swim daylily.

An aquatic plant native to tropical or subtropical America, growing in paddy fields or ponds. Once planted, it is a long-lived perennial plant.
