Sketchbook Session Draw A Face From Photographic Reference

In this excerpt from a live independent instruction session, I share how to draw a portrait of a young man based on photographic reference. This is one of my sketchbook sessions using pencil and paper.

This is not an academic drawing tutorial, and it's not a refined, finished drawing. My approach to drawing is to analyze what I see — using my whole brain, and comparing and contrasting shape, scale, proportion, and direction.

I began by setting up the horizontal and vertical axes for the face. Then I positioned landmarks based on what I observed in the photo. From there I "fleshed out" the features.
