The underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai in Polynesia, which has been erupting for the past 3 weeks, has thrown a column of ash to a height of almost 17 kilometers. The authorities of the kingdom of Tonga have urged the inhabitants of the surrounding islands to temporarily close their rainwater collection systems, as harmful particles can get into them.
The volcanic eruption began on December 20. Initially, the volcano was "warming up", but now it has demonstrated its power. At the same time, the land area increased by another 500-600 meters.
The wind carried the ashes to the east and north. Acid rain, which experts warned about, was not recorded.
