The Monk that ended the Gladiatorial games. The Martyrdom of Saint Telemachus

Saint Telemachus was a monk who tried to stop a gladiatorial fight in a Roman amphitheater, and was killed. The Christian Emperor Honorius, however, was impressed by the monk's martyrdom and it spurred him to issue a historic ban on gladiatorial fights. Honorius then decreed

That Rome no more should wallow in this old lust
Of Paganism, and make her festal hour
Dark with the blood of man who murder’d man.

True Moral courage as opposed to the moral larping we see today requires actual risk and potential sacrifice.
