CROSSFIRE by SACRED HAZE - usx9p1166029
From the archives of the SACRED HAZE collection, CROSSFIRE was written during the late 80’s, and recorded for one of the demo tapes released during that era. SACRED HAZE was a post-punk, psychedelic inspired rock band that created a wealth of material and played throughout Southern California between 1988 and 1989, featuring Rick Thornsly on bass guitar and vocals, David Driver on Drums & percussion, Carey Haze (Hayes) on guitar, and David Haze (Haycraft) on vocals and guitar. Original Demo Recording of CROSSFIRE available on iTunes, CDBaby.com, or other online services.
The lyrics and music for CROSSFIRE were first written and performed by SACRED HAZE in 1988, and the lyrical theme of the song was mainly cultivated from a combination of ideas from Rick Thornsly and David Haze. The lyrics are primarily based on their personal experimentation with psilocybin, peyote, and other hallucinogenics, combined with their ingestion of accompanying literature from Carlos Castaneda, Joseph Campbell, and Aldous Huxley, The lyrics reflect the warriors’ path of self-exploration and discovery, with the dangers and triumphs that erupt along the way. It touches on themes of sorcery, reincarnation, metaphysical connections with nature, but above all, the struggle of a human being faced with mortality.

The song is one of the few acoustic numbers in the SACRED HAZE collection and shows the influence of David Driver on the bands approach to the post-punk era. Driver’s influence on this track in particular was instrumental in shaping the overall persona of the band as a whole. The hybrid sound of punk, metal, classic rock, psychedelic, and folk (to name a few, but not all influences) made SACRED HAZE completely original, very unique, and even dangerous at times, all of which is personified in the CROSSFIRE recording.

CROSSIFE begins with a subdued, yet upbeat strumming of an acoustic guitar using non-traditional chords, accompanied by bongos and tablas. From there Carey Haze brings in a calculated, yet blistering guitar solo, which tastefully contrasts the dreamy soundscape. The intro evolves and then culminates into somewhat of a climactic cacophony, before re-converging into a more traditional progression, which is where the lyrics enter with, “Danger sneaks within…” Although the lyrics to the song are somewhat vague, the feelings evoked are heightened with the accompanying music, a specialty that SACRED HAZE perfected on a number of songs. The arrangement, timing, percussion, guitar lick, and lyrical placement, make the chorus, “Fire/Desire” inspiring yet mysterious, influential yet open,

Overall, CROSSFIRE is quite possibly one of the best tracks ever written, produced, and recorded by SACRED HAZE, and continues to be streamed, downloaded, and purchased worldwide. There’s just something very warm and beautiful about it, but also something somewhat stark and foreboding! CROSSFIRE is better left open to your own interpretation…….

This video was featured in a surf video from that same era.

CROSSFIRE (Lyrics)

Danger sneaks within
Sweet sanctuary of the wind
Contrary to beliefs of men
This fire goes out to burn again

FIRE/DESIRE

Pick me up
To the realness of Death
Careful mind perception
Of the body’s need for breath
A quick interpretation
Of the lives of those obsessed

FIRE/DESIRE

CROSSFIRE: Lyrics by Rick Thornsly/David Haycraft; Music by Rick Thornsly/Carey Hayes/ David Driver/David Haycraft.
