However if you look at annual death numbers, from 2010 to 2019 annual deaths in the US only increased by about 20k per year, however in 2020 the total annual deaths increased by over 400,000 compared to 2019. So there is definitely something going on. If you want to blame the excess deaths on alcohol/opioid abuse during lockdown, you would also have to consider a lot of people stayed home so the car accident, and related deaths would go down to sort of even things out. There's something out there that fucks up people's immunity and ability to fight off infection/flu/pneumonia and it's real although overblown and not as dangerous to young/healthy people. Saying a novel strain of the flu doesn't exist is just ridiculous
