Freediving the crystal clear spring waters of the cenote Car Wash in Tulum Mexico. This gorgeous setting is amazing for swimmers, freedivers, scuba divers, and photographers alike. It's such a surreal and peaceful setting.

The deepest portions of the cenote are towards one end, where the sides recess and the floor drops from about 20 feet to 50 feet, leading to underwater caves.

With this recessed shape of the cenote wall, diving to the deepest area requires about a 45 degree decent where you're actually under a sloped rock ceiling. Likewise, returning to the surface from the deepest point is not a mater of shooting straight up to the surface, but retracing your 45 degree glide path out from under the rock ceiling.

The required skill level ranges from just bobbing on the surface to every level of diver, so it's a great spot for anyone.

Tree roots growing from the walls of the cenote and branches on the bottom add a wonderful visual feature to dive around and explore. On this visit a photographer was working with two women subjects wearing dresses underwater - a beautiful site.

Provided swimmers aren't disturbing sediment on the bottom, the water is incredibly clear with visibility well over 100 feet. There are small fish and some fairly large turtles to see underwater.
