The Lord placed Israel in the center of the nations with countries all around her. Why did God do that? Well, Paul says, the Lord made Israel a light for the Gentiles so they could bring salvation to the ends of the earth. By putting Israel right in the middle of the world, everyone would pass through that region and have a chance to hear about God's great goodness, his mercy, his love, his law, and his salvation!
The Bible makes it clear, this is Jerusalem which I have set in the center of the nations with countries all around her, yet in her wickedness she has rebelled against my laws and decrees more than the nations and countries around her. She has rejected my laws and has not followed my decrees. Israel sank to the bottom of wickedness, hit bottom, and then started digging deeper.
Therefore this is what the sovereign Lord says, I myself am against you Jerusalem, and I will inflict punishment on you in the sight of the nations around you. Because of all your detestable idols, I will do to you what I have never done before and will never do again.
Well, the point that I want you to understand is that Israel is so degenerate and so apostate that God eventually decides he can do nothing with it. Israel declines into a condition for which there is no return! And when we get to a point of no return, destruction – total, overwhelming, complete destruction – is the only solution.
That's what happened in Noah's day. If God could have saved the world in Noah's day, he would have done so. But it wasn't possible to turn the degeneracy around. The same is true of all countries. This is why we have the rise and fall of Nations: God takes them down when they become so degenerate that there's no possible way of return, there's no recovery.
