QUICK ART TUTORIAL | "Should I Varnish My Painting" | Oil Stick Art | Carol Zirkle Montana Artist

This quick art tutorial answers the question: Should I varnish my painting oil sticks? The results of my little test helped me decide whether to varnish my oil stick art or not.

When oil paints cure, some of the colors tend to dull down. My test convinced me that varnishing brings back the colors to what they looked like when I painted them.

So, I always varnish. I use a brush to apply Winsor & Newton Artists' Retouching Varnish because it allows the paint to continue to cure, you can paint over it, and you can remove it if you want to. It also has a little UV protection.

Oil Sticks by: Paul deMarrais at http://pauldemarrais.com/home.html

I am a Montana artist residing in the beautiful high plains desert in southwestern Montana, also called the Big Sky Country! My paintings are heavily inspired by the colorful skies and it's effect on the colors of the land. I work primarily in oil sticks, and sometimes tubed oils using the CYMK palette. The vast majority of what I share here on YouTube involves my creative process: paintings, time lapses, tips, techniques, and how I do some of the technical and marketing tasks involved with being an artist today.

In 2000, I left a corporate job of 19 years, sold my house the next day and drove 1000 miles from Minneapolis to Montana the next day. I didn't know anyone here at the time, but have found a love filled life and am so glad I followed my passion, and hope you do too! PASSION ON!!
