This is the fourteenth of a series of short videos on Low Dose Medicine and in particular Cytokines. This video introduces the cytokine Tumor Necrosis Factor α , an important inflammatory cytokine.
TNF-alpha has a wide spectrum of biological activities, generally together with IL-1 and IL-6, such as prostaglandin synthesis by hypothalamic cells, HPA (hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal) axis stimulation by stimulating the release of corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), appetite suppression, fever induction, hepatocytes stimulation for the production of acute phase proteins, hypoglycemia, insulin resistance and stimulation of phagocytosis on macrophages.
High concentrations of TNF induce shock-like symptoms whereas the prolonged exposure to low concentrations of TNF can result in cachexia.
