Where do we draw the line between being self-centered and selfish? The culture surrounding the “self-love” movement has made quite an impact on social media, particularly towards Gen Z and Millennials. While the intention promotes a positive outlook towards the self, it can also lead to an aversion to conflict and labelling of negative emotions and criticism as “toxic”. However, life and reality rarely operate this way and part of growing as a person involves looking inwards, being honest, and facing the parts of ourselves that we don’t like. The key to navigating positive self-love is to self-regulate; recognizing “negative” emotions like anger as energy that just needs to be aired out to make space for more positive emotions.
What happens when you build a life and a house together? As I share my experience building a house with my husband and the differences in our perspective, Ada shares a similar experience with her husband and how they successfully navigated this big step by forming a team of two people with different areas of expertise, her in finance and him in architecture and construction. Ada also shares how life and love is practical and how she understands money as not the endgame in a marriage, but an important tool in making marriages work.
Ada discusses the Goalcast video that went viral
In 2019, Goalcast shared a video of Ada’s keynote speech discussing her previous marriage and how she eventually left because of how unhappy she was. The video went viral with over 40 million views, and she received a considerable amount of negative feedback over a video she believed was a 20-minute condensed version of her 9 year-marriage. After she reached out to friends and family about the shame she felt over the video, she finally confronts it and decides to watch it again. What she thought would have been a difficult process led to her realizing the beauty and impact of her video and her journey to self-forgiveness.
