Novak Djokovic supporters lock down Melbourne CBD streets as protest turns violent

Police used capsicum spray to get Novak Djokovic fans off a car they thought the tennis star was in, after his stunning legal win over Australian authorities.

The supporters arrived at the CBD building just after 8pm in a sea of red, blue and white.

Wearing Serbian flags and chanting “Free Novak!”, the supporters blocked traffic in both directions.

Things got heated when the mob surrounded a car trying to get through the street.

Police used pepper spray at Djokovic supporters after they swarmed what they believed was the tennis star’s vehicle.

Scenes quickly turned violent as supporters closed on the vehicle.

Police told demonstrators to “back the f--- off” before they fired tear gas in multiple directions.

Novak Djokovic had been released from detention after a judge overturned the decision to cancel his visa.
