"Liberty or License?"

27th in our series the Book of 1 Peter

I. The Freedom We Have in Christ - 1 Peter 2:15-16
A. Liberty by which Christ has made us free - Galatians 5:1
1. Literal bondage - Jeremiah 34:8-11
2. Deeper still is spiritual bondage - 2 Peter 2:18-19
a. Liberty is not obtained by violating God’s Law
b. Licentiousness always leads to deeper bondage - Romans 6:20, 23
B. We are “freemen” in Christ
1. As we were slaves of sin, a bondage we could not free ourselves from
2. Christ redeemed us, buying us from the slave block of sin by His death on the cross - John 8:35-36
C. The nature of this “glorious liberty” - Romans 8:20-21
1. The fall of Adam & Eve plunged the Created order into bondage
2. The restoration of all Creation is by the Cross & liberating those who by faith in Christ are set free - Isaiah 61:1-2
a. Jesus quotes this prophecy in describing His ministry Luke 4:18
b. The Perfect Law of Liberty - James 1:25
c. Seeking to obey God’s Law from a heart which loves Him is the path of liberty - Psalm 119:45

II. Be on Guard not to abuse your Liberty in Christ
A. We may misuse our liberty in causing another to stumble - 1 Corinthians 8:9
B. We may misuse it as an opportunity for the flesh - Galatians 5:13
1. The corrupt thinking is that I can go on sinning because I will be forgiven
2. Such thinking indicates a heart not yet transformed
