Russian peacekeepers landed in Kazakhstan amid recent escalations in violence erupting during large-scale protests in several cities across the country.

The unit is being dispatched under the decision of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO), as part of a peace-keeping response amid major unrest in Kazakhstan sparked by protests that began over fuel price hikes.

In addition to the Russian peacekeepers, the armed forces of Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan are joining the mission.
