Jan. 1st, Today In History Abraham Lincoln Signs The Emancipation Proclamation.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1862, declaring that all enslaved individuals in states currently engaged in rebellion against the Union "would be then, thenceforward, and forever free" as of January 1, 1863.
