IRS CP2000 Matching Notices

The IRS CP2000 "matching notice" is issued to taxpayers after they file their return with the IRS.

If a Form 1040 reports income information that differs from third-party information submitted to the IRS via Forms W2, 1099, etc., then the IRS may issue a CP2000 notice which proposes some adjustments.

If you agree with the proposed changes on the CP2000 notice, you can simply pay the taxes due on the notice. There is no need to file a Form 1040-X amended tax return.

However, in some cases, it does make sense to file an amended Form 1040.
