Moment motorist in Virginia is freed after being stranded on I-95 for THIRTEEN HOURS

Interstate 95 in eastern Virginia reopened Tuesday night after a severe weather conditions left thousands of motorists stranded for hours overnight.

Traffic along the 47-mile stretch of I-95 came to a standstill about 8PM ET on Monday and did not begin moving again until Tuesday afternoon.

Rescue crews in Virginia were called in after a 27-hour blizzard caused travellers to become stranded on the snowed-in highway.

Susan Phalen, a former state department senior advisor, was left stranded for close to 15 hours on the Northbound Interstate near Stafford, before she was eventually freed.

Video footage shows the moment traffic finally started moving at 8.41am.

"FINALLY! After over 11 hours of not moving an inch, I-95 NB is crawling forward. Any movement is exciting at this point."

Susan first tweeted at 6.33am on Tuesday morning having already been stuck for NINE HOURS. Traffic at this stage was in total gridlock.

She said: "People are turning off their cars to save gas, then get cold and turn them back on.

"People are hitting point of no return, shielding themselves with car doors and peeing in the street.

"When do we get our jetpacks?"

After being at a standstill for close to thirteen hours Susan began to voice concerns for the thousands of stranded motorists.

At 8:06am she tweeted:

"VDOT (Virginia Department of Transportation) Fredericksburg says dial 911 with life threatening emergencies.

"Not exactly sure how they’d get to us, what we need is drone delivered pizzas all up and down I-95. Airdrop them in.

"People need medicine, water, food, and toilets.

"I worry for the elderly out here."
