Instructions:

1. Lie down on your back with your arms by your side, or sit up with your back straight in a place you will not be disturbed.
2. When you hear 'IN' inhale through both nostrils with a smooth consistent breath, keeping your breath silent and chest movement to a minimum. The less deeply you need to inhale means the better your tissue oxygenation, and the healthier you are.
3. When you hear 'OUT' exhale fully through both nostrils or pursed lips with a smooth consistent breath. Keep your breath as smooth as you can with no jitters or stutters. Allow your exhale and diaphragmatic muscles to be as relaxed as possible as you exhale fully.
4.At first it may seem difficult but when you get used to the music it will be effortless and deeply relaxing. You can also make a sound like an ocean wave to help your breath stay smooth and rhythmic.
5. When you hear ‘HOLD’, pause your breath after your exhalation, until the next instruction. This completes one round.
6. Repeat this process for the duration of the session.

Yogi Ramacharaka, in his acclaimed book, “The Hindu-Yogi Science of Breath” (Ramacharaka, 1903), talks extensively about how and why rhythmic breathing is the secret to attaining physical, spiritual, and even psychic mastery according to the master Yogis in India.

Your own natural biorhythms are also affected by the vibrations of your external environment, people you spend time with and including the movement of the planets and ebb of flow of the tides.

According to tantric yoga when you lose your harmony with the environment your biorhythms and emotions go out of balance. However rhythmic breathing can restore this balance. In the more esoteric applications of yogic rhythmic breathing, certain techniques can also allow you to manipulate your emotional energy and tap into higher energetic vibrations where universal pranic energy can be harnessed for various purposes.

When you breathe at a certain rhythm this can harmonise and entrain your biorhythms creating a state of ‘coherence’ where you benefit from optimal blood flow from the heart to the brain.

Additionally when you consciously control the rhythm of your breath, your entire system gets in sync with this rhythm. Your lungs move in rhythm to your will and this process then allows your autonomic functions to come under the influence of your will and conscious control. This can allow you to consciously send energy to organs, increase or decrease circulation and stimulate nerve impulses.
