The Amur tiger is one of the largest terrestrial predators on our planet and one of the smallest subspecies of the tiger, listed in the Red Book. The only one of its kind who has mastered life in the snow.
By the 40s of the twentieth century, there were less than 50 individuals on the planet. In 1947, a widespread ban on hunting the Amur tiger was introduced. As a result of the measures taken, the long-term decline in the tiger population in Russia stopped and was replaced by its stabilization. Scattered population groups of animals began to gradually develop empty habitats, but the focal distribution of the species remained.
Since the mid-1960s. until the mid-1980s. the tiger population grew steadily throughout the territory south of the river. Amur. The tiger settled in almost all suitable habitats within the range, and the integrity of the population was restored in the Sikhote-Alin.
Since the mid-1980s. until the early 1990s. In Northern Sikhote-Alin, tigers began to permanently inhabit places where they were previously absent or were extremely rare - in the basins they were extremely rare - in the basins of the Samarga, Nelma, Botchi, and Kopi rivers.
By the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union, the population of the Amur tiger was practically restored. The abundance of this rare predator approached the potential species capacity of the land.
But the USSR collapsed and the so-called "transition period" began, with all its costs: the efficiency of the work of law enforcement agencies and customs services fell sharply, the system for the protection of wild animals collapsed. There has been a virtual collapse of the protection of forests, which are the habitat of the tiger. Impunity has led to a sharp surge in poaching.
The first wave of poaching was stopped by the caring people of Russia and the world. But the emerging trends in population growth still abruptly came to naught, and by 2008 the tiger population had declined again.
The Russian state, however, gradually grew stronger: the work of the customs service, the State Hunting Supervision Service and other authorized structures was restored. A radical change in the conservation of the Amur tiger in Russia took place at the Tiger Forum in St. Petersburg in 2010: the President of Russia joined in solving the problem.
The active work of the Russian Geographical Society, other public organizations, nature reserves and national parks to restore the Amur tiger population has significantly improved the situation: to date, the tiger population in Russia is estimated at 600 - 630 individuals. About 20-30 more individuals live in China.
