This is the thirteenth of a series of short videos on Low dose Medicine and in particular Cytokines. This video introduces the cytokine IGF 1 , the ‘anti age’ growth factor.
Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), is a protein similar in molecular structure to insulin mainly produced by the liver.
Its production is stimulated by the growth hormone (GH) and can be retarded by under nutrition or malnutrition, growth hormone insensitivity, lack of growth hormone receptors and it is also reduced with age.
In children, it stimulates bone growth and development of organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys.
In humans, the growth hormone (GH) made in the anterior pituitary gland stimulates the liver to produce insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) which then stimulates and has a growth-promoting effect on almost every cell in the body, especially kidney, muscles, cartilage, liver, nerves, skin, hematopoietic cells, and lungs.
