I always tell parents (that ask), if they have a kid that is interested in guitar; to start them with an electric (a decent but inexpensive one), and an amp with a few sound effects (pretty normal today). The acoustic can come later. <- and have a pro (at Guitar Center or Sam Ash to file the action down some. They start crazy high.
