Every two days, a case of mistreatment against animals is registered in RJ, points out ISP.
A study conducted by the Institute of Public Safety (ISP) of Rio de Janeiro indicated that an animal is a victim of mistreatment at least every two days in the state. The survey considered the occurrences recorded between 2019 and 2020.
Dogs lead the cases of mistreatment, with 102 records. Then come cats and birds, with 35 and 29 citations, respectively. Besides these animals, the survey indicated occurrences with 12 other species, such as monkeys, snakes, and turtles.
Most of the crimes occurred inside a residence (63%) and the guardians were the perpetrators in 58% of the cases. In 12% of the records, neighbors were responsible for the aggressions. Among the finalized occurrences, almost 70% of the cases resulted in the rescue of the animals.
Many people still do not know or do not understand that the practice of abuse against animals is a crime and the perpetrator may have to serve detention for three months to one year, besides paying a fine. In the case of dogs and cats, the law provides for an even greater penalty, which can reach five years in prison.
